Buffalo Paddocks Laborer – Farm Hand (6-month Contract)
Department: Tsuut’ina Lands Administration (Buffalo Paddocks/Agricultural Program)
Reports To: Buffalo Paddocks/Agricultural Manager
JOB SUMMARY
Assisting the Manager in the upkeeping of the Buffalo Paddocks ranch, the Nation Fields and structural buildings as well as fences, and corral system that is on-site, and off-site. Must assist with maintaining the health, safety and care of the Buffalo herd; which includes feeding, inspecting, repairing and reporting any concerns to the manager. Assisting in the cleaning and upkeeping of all equipment and machinery used on and off-site. As well as taking part in assisting with loading and moving bales for Nation Members and the Paddocks, when required.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitoring food and water supplies for the Buffalo herd; following the schedule and portions set out by the Manager
- Must drive vehicles and equipment: trucks, tractors, side-by-side,
- Clean & maintain equipment, vehicles as well as tools, as necessary
- Must assist with the team in rotating the herd on the different pasture areas in the Paddocks, this land management will ensure to help the grass, roots and environment to have the time it needs to recover and be able to grow
- As well as assisting in moving the herd’s different bulls or separating the herd as directed
- Inspect, repair and maintain fence lines, buildings, and corral systems daily
- Assisting in the different projects for the Paddocks and Agriculture Program; as in, helping updating the corral systems, platforms, fencing, etc.
- Assisting both the Agricultural Program and Buffalo Paddocks when it comes to the herd and both the programs including farming; as well as prepping for winter
- Protecting the herd from predators, reporting to manager
- Must be willing to take updated training for certifications, equipment,
- Assisting the manager and crew when needed for field/crop work, hauling and repairing fence lines in Band Fields
- Must be willing to work long hours, and be readily available on evenings and weekends; as needed
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with carpentry, wood working skills is required
- Heavy duty equipment experience is an asset, as you will be working with tractors
- Must be a self-starter, and have the ability to work well in a team and alone
- Must have knowledge of Tsuut’ina Nation culture and language
- Must be willing to learn new skills related to farming, ranch handling,
- Must have a valid Alberta Driver’s License and must have own reliable transportation
- Must be willing to sign an Oath of Confidentiality
- Must provide a current and clean Criminal Record Check
