Under the direct supervision of the Casework Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor, the TNCFSS Generalist Caseworker ensures the rights and safety of children are safeguarded in a healthy, cultural environment and will work with families to improve the quality of life, while endeavoring to preserve the language and culture of Tsuut’ina Nation, through the incorporation of Casework Practice Model, Practice Standards and the Signs of Safety Model.

SCOPE:

Generalist Caseworkers provide ongoing intervention (protection) and family enhancement casework practice as per the policies and guidelines provided by the Alberta Child Youth and Family Enhancement Act (CYFE Act).  The CYFE Act places a great emphasis on assessment (Intake and investigation) of children and families to determining safety of a child(ren), the need for intervention and the type of intervention or enhancement supports required.  The Casework Practice Model and Signs of Safety are models based on the philosophy that children, youth and families should have input into the decisions that affect their lives.  Assessment, engagement, collaboration and preserving families are the cornerstones of these models.

  • Generalists undertake ongoing assessment of child/youth at risk, and families to inform/build the case plan, incorporating Parental Capacity, Child Development, and Environmental Factors.
  • Generalists will work with families, help them to understand their situation, and work with them to address issues causing the child to be in the need of intervention.
  • Generalists engage, collaborate, and coordinate along with the family, the Assessor, community agencies, support service providers and natural family supports to develop the concurrent plan and provide services to children/youth and families in need.
  • Generalists are responsible for the ongoing assessment of children youth and families, case planning and provision of/or management of, services and interventions to meet the child’s/youth’s/ family’s unmet needs within specified timeframes.
  • Generalists have considerable independence and are expected to continuously consult with the Casework Supervisor at identified decision points of practice, providing rationale for their recommendations and casework with the child/youth/families.
  • Generalist will possess knowledge regarding Intergenerational Trauma and trauma informed integrative collaborative approaches the supporting Indigenous families

All decisions are driven by consideration for the child, youth and their family and the worker’s professional judgement within the parameters of Acts, Regulations, Policies and Standards and the Tsuut’ina philosophy of Isga’k’a’ Kanano-na’ Nanitin-na’.

Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assess risk/safety factors
  • Ability to work with non-voluntary families
  • Case conferencing/ family meeting coordination
  • Positive engagement and collaboration with service providers, CFSA’s, DFNA’s, hospitals, RCMP, Prevention Support Services, Sheldon Kennedy Advocacy Center, community service programs (Education, Health, etc.) and all other support services
  • Development and completion of the ongoing review of the Concurrent Plans, Transition to Independence Plans, Supervision Order Plans, Secure Service Plans, Safety Plans, Cultural and Permanency Plans, etc.
  • Court preparation and attendance
  • Ability to be on-call 24 hours during an on-call rotation
  • Records Management – complete CICIO (data base) entries and documentation required as per file standards on all assigned matters
  • Casework consultation with Casework Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor on a regular basis
  • Assist in Community Collaboration events or projects
  • Represent TNCFSS in a professional and ethical manner at all times

  • Ability to organize and prioritize required work to meet deadlines with minimal supervision
  • Self-motivated and demonstrate ability to problem solve with tact, cooperation and persistence

  • Other duties as assigned by the Casework Supervisor/Associate Director/Director

  • Working knowledge of applicable regulations, policy standards and protocols regarding service delivery
  • Working knowledge of court system related to role and responsibility of child, family and the Generalist Caseworker
  • Working knowledge of procedures for initiating, obtaining, and maintain legal authorities under the CYFE Act

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Social Work and/or MSW plus some direct related experience working with children and families.
  • Delegation certification training is mandatory to deliver intervention and enhancement services in the province of Alberta
  • Front line child protection rule is essential, however not necessary
  • Generalist Caseworkers must demonstrate a strong knowledge, assessment skills and the ability to assess family functioning, needs, risks and strengths.
  • Generalists must have knowledge and experience working with sensitive, cultural approaches to child protection practices in an indigenous community.
  • Generalists must have flexibility in the schedule as this position is required to participate in an on-call/after hour rotation schedule which includes evenings and weekends.
  • TNCFSS Generalists are encouraged to register and maintain registration with the Alberta College of social workers
  • Generalists have a valid Alberta driver’s license and a reliable, properly insured vehicle as significant travel is required as well as occasional transportation of clientele
  • Generalists undergo security clearances: Criminal Record Check Alberta Child Intervention Check and academic verification
