JOB SUMMARY

The Recovery Coach will be an integral part of a recovering addict. The recovery coach is a generalist position. The goal of the Recovery Coach Program is to meet participants where they are at in their recovery process – assisting people in their recovery journey pre and post-treatment by bridging individuals back to their community and to health natural support systems. Recovery Coaches will help individuals to create a plan and provide a supportive web that may include finding a sponsor, identifying treatment options and supporting the process, and connecting people to local recovery meetings and events.

Additional supports include: identifying mental health supports and medical services and providing referrals to community partners to help with housing, employment search, and training. Recovery Coaches bring their unique experience into action and know the struggles, successes, joy, hope, and challenges of the recovery process. Recovery Coaches will utilize their personal experiences to be guides to services, modeling recovery and actively demonstrating that long-term recovery is an attainable outcome.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support to, and interact positively with participants
  • Participate in group program delivery to assist them in dealing with abuse, addiction, and mental health distress and support their recovery
  • Monitor, evaluate, and record during each shift client progress with respect to treatment goals, and communicate with other members of treatment team as well regarding patient care
  • Monitor closely and observe participants self-administering all medications following organizational procedures, ensuring that all documentation is completed as required
  • Refer patient, client, or family to community resources for housing or treatment to assist in recovery from mental or physical illness, following through to ensure service efficacy
  • Support family members to assist them in understanding, dealing with, and supporting the client
  •  Work with the participants in aftercare program and support to achieve the aftercare plan
  • Support assessment, intake and orientation into the facility

PROGRAM DELIVERY:

  • Ensure that program activities are effectively and efficiently delivered in accordance with the mission and the goals of the organization
  • Coordinate the delivery of services among different program activities
  • Operate program activities within the policies, procedures, rules and regulations of the organization
  • Organize and participate in recreational and leisure activities
  • Assure the health and safety of all participants at all times, including enforcing house rules
  •  Intervene in client interactions to deescalate conflict and promote positive relations
  • Actively communicate with all members of the treatment team for effective service and risk management
  • Ensure that all forms and records established to document program activities are completed thoroughly and in a timely manner
  • Participate actively in all required shift change activities
  • Implement a consistent structure of daily activities including chores, meditation time, house meetings and bedtime
  • Ensure that long-term goals and objectives set to achieve the successful outcome of the program are achieved
  • Participate in the development of new initiatives and evaluation initiatives to support the strategic direction of the organization and maintain or improve quality
  • Actively participate in personal and educational growth initiatives
  • Complete all required courses in a timely manner
  • Identify points of interest for personal development and communicate to supervisors when opportunities arise

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Degree or Diploma in Social Work, Addictions, Psychology or other related human services field
  • 2-5 years’ experience working in residential setting and with addictions
  • CPR/ First Aid
  • Knowledge of 12 steps /Big Book
  • Knowledge of Addiction, Abuse and Mental health challenges
  • Some knowledge of community resources
  • Understanding of crisis management and ability to de-escalate crisis situations
  • Non-violent crisis intervention an asset
  • Ability to handle stressful and people sensitive situations
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative and effective working relationships
  • Demonstrates analytical and critical thinking abilities with pro-active decision-making
  • Flexible, adaptable and able to work effectively in a variety of settings and in a cross-cultural situation
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English
  • Proficiency in the use of computers for: Word processing, Databases, Spreadsheets, E-mail, Internet and Fax

 

General Employment Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Alberta Driver’s License and must have own reliable transportation
  • Must be willing to sign an Oath of Confidentiality
  • Must be willing to Travel and must hold a current valid credit card for travel purpose
  • Must be able to pass a security clearance

 

IN ADDITION:

  • Depending on your position – a Vulnerable Sector check must be required upon application from all provinces, states or countries lived in for the last four years. Vulnerable Sector checks must be completed within the past month.
