Twylla Starlight (Traditional Name: Xani-tii Tsik’a – Buffalo Woman) is a respected leader, financial professional, and proud citizen of Tsuut’ina Nation. Raised within a strong family foundation shaped by the teachings and guidance of her grandmother, parents, and extended family, Twylla’s identity and values are deeply rooted in Tsuut’ina. Although she grew up in Calgary, her grandmother’s home on the Nation was always her anchor, grounding her sense of responsibility and commitment to her people.
Her decision to serve as Xàkújàà is guided by intergenerational teachings and a clear sense of purpose. Encouraged by her grandmother to learn how the outside world operates and return to serve her people, Twylla has dedicated her life to building systems, knowledge, and leadership capacity that strengthen the Nation today while protecting opportunities for future generations.
Twylla’s leadership and governance experience spans decades of service to Tsuut’ina Nation. She has served on the Boards of Tsuut’ina Child and Family Services Society, Tsuut’ina Education Board of Trustees, and Tsuut’ina Enterprises, including roles as Trustee and Director. Professionally, she built her career within Tsuut’ina Finance, progressing through various financial roles and ultimately serving as Director of Finance.
She holds a Bachelor of Applied Business Administration with distinction and is a Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager and Certified Aboriginal Professional Administrator. Her commitment to lifelong learning is further reflected in her lifetime membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honour Society, recognizing academic excellence and leadership.
Throughout her career, Twylla has been recognized not only for her technical expertise, but for her people-centred leadership. She is known for mentoring staff, supporting professional development, and fostering strong teams grounded in trust, accountability, and respect. Her leadership approach emphasizes empowerment, succession planning, and creating effective systems that allow people to do their best work.
For the 2025–2028 term, Xàkújàà Twylla’s focus is on strengthening organizational effectiveness through clear processes, updated policies, and follow-through. She serves with integrity, accountability, and a deep commitment to empowering employees and safeguarding the future of the Tsuut’ina Nation.
