JOB SUMMARY:

The Grief Counsellor provides professional, culturally responsive counselling services to individuals and families experiencing grief and loss. Reporting to the Director of Health and Wellness Services, the role works collaboratively with Health and Wellness teams and internal Tsuut’ina Nation programs to deliver comprehensive, client-centred mental health support. The Grief Counsellor supports clients coping with loss resulting from death, significant life transitions, or other grief-related experiences by providing assessment, counselling, crisis intervention, and education. The position plays a key role in promoting healing, resilience, and healthy coping strategies while ensuring ethical practice, confidentiality, and alignment with best practices in grief counselling.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Clinical Counselling and Client Support– provide individual counselling services to clients experiencing grief and loss. Facilitate group counselling and therapy sessions for individuals experiencing similar grief-related challenges. Conduct comprehensive assessments to evaluate the impact of grief on clients’ emotional, mental, and functional well-being. Develop, implement, and regularly review individualized treatment plans. Provide crisis intervention and immediate support during acute or complex phases of grief. Support clients in creating memorials or tributes to honor loved ones, as appropriate.
  • Education, Coping, and Healing Strategies– educate clients on the grieving process, including common reactions and stages of grief. Assist clients in identifying, developing, and practicing healthy coping strategies. Lead workshops, seminars, and community education sessions focused on grief, loss, and healing. Promote emotional resilience and self-care strategies for individuals and families.
  • Collaboration and Integrated Care– collaborate with Health and Wellness Services staff and other internal Tsuut’ina Nation programs to ensure coordinated and holistic care. Work with physicians, psychiatric services, and other healthcare professionals to support integrated client care. Provide referrals to external mental health, medical, or community supports as needed.
  • Professional Practice, Ethics, and Quality Improvement– maintain accurate, secure, and confidential client records in accordance with ethical, legal, and organizational standards. Adhere to professional ethical standards, confidentiality protocols, and applicable legislation. Participate in audits, incident reviews, and quality-improvement initiatives related to counselling, physician, and psychiatric services. Stay current with best practices, research, and emerging techniques in grief counselling. Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of counselling services.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Health and Wellness Services.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

  • Desired Education, Knowledge, and Experience:
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Counselling, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
    • Licensed Professional Counsellor (LPC) or equivalent Provincially approved certification.
    • Specialized training or certification in grief counselling.
    • Experience providing counselling services to individuals experiencing grief and loss.
    • Comprehensive understanding of the grieving process and grief-related mental health concerns.
    • Knowledge of therapeutic modalities relevant to grief counselling.
    • Experience conducting client assessments and developing treatment plans.
  • Personal Attributes:
    • Strong empathy, emotional intelligence, and active listening skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective therapeutic relationships.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Demonstrated crisis intervention, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and across Health and Wellness Services.
    • High level of professionalism, resilience, and ability to manage emotionally demanding situations.
    • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.
    • Commitment to ethical, confidential, non-judgmental, client-centred, and culturally respectful care.
    • Commitment to continuous professional development, reflective practice, and participation in quality-improvement activities.
  • General Employment Requirements:
    • Valid Driver’s License, and reliable transportation.
