Tsuut’ina Contingency Department Logo Contest Winner

Article

Gújā nágúdīgòy(Good morning),

Congratulations to the winner of Contingency’s Logo Contest, Kehiw Eagletail.

Below is Kehiw Eagletail’s detailed description of his logo creation:

I seen the poster on facebook and noticed there was no prompt or any brief to follow. So I took a step back and had taken a look at what contingency does as a department for the nation. I also researched the literal definition of ‘contingency’ and came across this definition:

A future event or circumstance which is possible but cannot be predicted with certainty

With a strong emphasis on cultural and social well-being, I wanted to incorporate elements that represent care, safety, and cultural support.

The Tipi in the centre represents our home fires, the place where we grow, where we cry, where we laugh, where we rest, it is our safe space to be ourselves. It is the family communal space where we all come together and unite.

The Hands represent the role that contingency plays as apart of our community, during hard-times and uncertainty, the contingency department is there ready to support whatever our community may be going through.

The smaller circles can represent many different things, the first meaning can be our ancestors watching over us, protecting us through their prayers.

The second meaning can be our leadership, there are 11 circles to represent 11 minor chiefs, the inner larger circle can represent the chief.

The third meaning of the 11 smaller circles can also be a representation of tipi poles from the top view. But with only 11 tipi poles, the tipi is half done. That’s where contingency (the hands) comes in to complete the other half.

The arrows pointing inwards can act as a message to look inward during times of uncertainty. Look into your home fires, look into your body, mind and spirit. Our bodies are considered a home fire too, they house our spirit. Take care of your family, take care of your community.

As for the colour palette:

I chose soft earth-tones like blues, beiges and a moss green to represent the care and support contingency offers.
